Phi Tran: Project Engineer

The 29-year-old Phi Tran works as a Project Engineer at VINCI Energies.

Within this position, she has the opportunity to spend a year following up various projects at each of the 4 business lines of the group, and then decide which position and sector she wants to be employed in.

“I have already learned a lot on a technical level,
but this job is also a personal enrichment.”

  • Name: Phi Tran
  • Age: 29
  • Studies: Master of Chemical Engineering (KU Leuven)
  • Function: Project Engineer
  • Hobbies: Kickboxing, winter sports, making custom and handmade (engagement) rings

How did you get the chance to follow this personalized journey?

Phi: During my studies, I won a thesis competition run by VINCI Energies and Womenpreneur, an organization whose goal is to promote the place of women in the fields of business and technology, and in society in general. The award was to follow up diverse projects at VINCI Energies for a year in order to discover which position suits me best. I am very happy with this initiative, since as a young graduate it is not easy to know which career path you want to pursue. The company also immediately appealed to me on several levels. For example, I quickly noticed while doing some research that VINCI Energies pays a lot of attention to promoting technical positions to women. This proved that you are not treated differently as a woman here, which was crucial for me. In addition, sustainability is an important factor for me, which is an area in which VINCI Energies also invests a lot.

What have you learned during this trajectory so far?

Phi: I started here right after my studies, so I have already learned a lot about the work field and the practical implementation of the functions that interest me. My colleagues have been supportive from day one, welcoming me with open arms and always communicating openly and transparently. I was also quickly given the confidence to work autonomously. The unique thing about my trajectory is that it gives me a helicopter view of what is happening within VINCI Energies. Sometimes I learn all about solar panels, other times the focus is more on electricity. So I get a taste of a whole range of specializations. My different perspective is appreciated and people actively listen to my suggestions. For example, I have been told that I am a refreshing added value to the company. This seems to be the case partly thanks to my new learning experiences, feminine mindset and different cultural background. By working within different brands, I also see how they all have their own way of working. Each company within VINCI Energies is unique in their operation and their culture, which is really beautiful to notice.

How do you see your future?

Phi: I seize every opportunity I am given, that has always been the case. It is important for me to keep evolving, not only on a technical level, but also in terms of soft skills. For example, mediation and negotiation are activities that I enjoy and for which I followed a course in addition to my studies. I am a very ambitious person, so I like to think big. For example, I hope to grow into a management position. Roles in which women are underrepresented appeal to me, because I want to show that it is possible. Hopefully by doing this and with this testimony I can also inspire the next generation, so that more and more women will pursue technical and management positions. Above all, I want to show that generation that the possibilities are endless and that every step brings you closer to success.
